If you think it is about the series telecast-ed in TV well no, you got it wrong. I'm talking about the 'vampire diaries' by L.J.Smith. The number of books she has written about vampires is long. But it also to be noted that the whole number just follows one after the other. It is a continuous story with the same characters as that of the ones used in the TV show. But the story- well it is completely different.
The initial story in book 1 makes you feel it is so much close to the Twilight book 1, and there were parts when you may feel it is pretty close to Harry Potter series too. But those resemblances stop with the book 1 and 2. And if you are a vampires books/movies/TV shows lover, please be careful in remembering whose vampire is capable of doing what. Do not confuse Stephene Meyar's vampires with L.J.Smith's. They are different in many ways and many occasions.
The awakening, The struggle, The Fury - Book 1,2 and 3 is a single incident story and it is from Elena's (a human initially, a vampire later and dead in the end) POV. The dark reunion (book 4) is a different incident where a ware-wolf and an original vampire is introduced. But that is the end of the ware-wolf (for quiet sometime) and this book is from Bonnie's (a witch) POV. These 4 books has
The next three books are called as 'The return trilogy: nightfall, shadow souls, Midnight'. These three (book 5,6 and 7) has a story line that indeed didn't make sense if the books were called as Vampire Diaries as it had spirit world, Guardians, mortal after death episodes and so on. You can expect all possible unbelievable characters like ware-foxes, ware-birds, a different world and culture, hunters, dreadful midnight and what not?
The last three books are called 'The Hunters trilogy: Phantom, Moonsong, Destiny Raising'. These three books (book 6,9 and 10) is about the whole bunch of characters once again meet a different specimen this time, fight it as usual and finally getting back together and finding peace and happy life. The whole bunch finishes its school life episodes, moves to a new place to starts their college life and there they have a new society, new bunch of ware-wolves (good ones this time) waiting for them. I'm yet to read the last book 'Destiny Raising' as it got released just last week.
And to add more, there is a different series called 'Stefan Diaries' and it is completely from Stefan's (the Vampire) POV - his life as a human and as a vampire (his past till date). But this series (6 volumes) is like a back story to the TV series and not to the novels. Certain facts like the year, the way Katherine and Stefan's dad was killed etc made me feel so.
And about the characters:
Elena-She is the protagonist, the girl who had lost her parents and is a magnet to problems.
Margret-Elena's 3 year old sweet little sister,
Judiath - Elena's aunt, Robert-Elena's uncle to be.
Matt-Elena's Ex boy friend and her best friend,
Bonnie - the red haired little girl who always speaks what she thinks (Elena's best friend),
Meredith- A calm matured girl who never shows her emotions out (Elena's best friend),
Alaric - A professor who dealt with unbelievable stuffs psychology (Meredith's Boyfriend),
Caroline - White haired very beautiful looking Elena's childhood friend who later became her bitter enemy,
Tylor - the bad ware-wolf and Caroline twins' mom
There were many other smaller characters like Vicky, Susan, Sage, Isobel and her family, Mrs.Flowers, Lady Ulma, Lakshmi, Caleb, Zandlar, Cicilia, James etc and the negative roles -Katherine (Vampire from the past), Kalus (the original), Shinichi (ware-fox), Miaso (ware-fox), Inari etc
And the main reason why this is called as 'Vampire Diaries' -
Stefan - Elena's boyfriend - a very loyal, down to earth, honest person.
Damon - Stefan's brother - A rude, little arrogant person but extremely sweet at heart and my favorite of all.
It is childish and mostly a book dedicated for youth and particularly for Vampire lovers.
